Forgiveness involves extending compassion to those who have wronged us, relinquishing control, and releasing negative emotions associated with an incident. Embracing forgiveness and mercy contributes to effective interpersonal relationships, cooperation, job satisfaction, personal morale, problem-solving, adaptability, and productivity (VIA Character Strengths Survey & Character Reports, 2021). Forgiveness, a character strength and virtue of temperance, aids in preventing excessive behaviors and maintaining balance. Without forgiveness, individuals may dwell on negative experiences and struggle with emotions related to consumption (VIA Character Strengths Survey & Character Reports, 2021). The Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS) assesses dispositional forgiveness, indicating a general tendency to forgive (Thompson et al., 2021). My total HFS score of 121 suggests a propensity to forgive oneself, others, and uncontrollable situations (The Model and Definition of Forgiveness — HFS, 2021). Cultivating forgiveness enables individuals to release negative feelings and foster compassion (VIA Character Strengths Survey & Character Reports, 2021).
Relationship to Positive Psychology
The HFS evaluation quantitatively examines character strengths relevant to everyday life, promoting awareness and utilization of positive characteristics (Thompson et al., 2021). Forgiveness correlates with tolerance, happiness, contentment, confidence, reduction of negative thoughts, relaxation, positive social interaction, and illness prevention (Toner et al., 2012).
Application to Social Issues
Forgiveness yields physical, mental, relational, and spiritual benefits, alleviating anxiety and sadness (Worthington et al., 2007). Unforgiveness can lead to depression, anxiety, and rage, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness for personal well-being (Yalçın & Malkoç, 2014; Zechmeister & Romero, 2002).
